Mastering Dithering Techniques in Pixel Art
Donald Cjapi·
What Is Dithering?
Dithering is a technique where you alternate pixels of two different colors in a pattern to create the illusion of a third color or a smooth gradient. It's one of the most powerful tools in a pixel artist's toolkit.
Common Dithering Patterns
- Checkerboard: Alternating pixels in a grid pattern — creates a 50/50 mix
- Ordered dithering: Using specific patterns at different densities for gradient effects
- Random dithering: Scattering pixels randomly for organic textures
When to Use Dithering
Dithering works best when you have a limited color palette and need smooth transitions. It's particularly effective for:
- Sky gradients at sunset
- Metallic surfaces and reflections
- Ground textures like sand or grass
- Fog and atmospheric effects
Tips for Clean Dithering
Keep it consistent. Use the same dithering density across similar materials. If your sky uses a 25% dither, don't suddenly jump to 75% on the same gradient. Don't overdo it. Too much dithering can make your art look noisy. Sometimes a hard edge between two colors is more readable than a dithered transition.Enjoyed this article?
